What you may have missed in sports 11/23 – 11/25

In the unfortunate case you didn’t get to watch sports this past weekend, Fourth Quarter Sports has a recap of the events you may have missed. Let’s get you all caught up!

 

NFL

Tom Brady makes history

With a pass against the Jets yesterday, Tom Brady set the NFL record for most passing yards in history (regular and postseason). Brady passed Peyton Manning, who had 79,279 yards passing in his career.

Browns snap road skid

In a 35-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the Cleveland Browns broke their road losing streak. Up until yesterday, the Browns had lost 25 road games in a row. It was their first road win since 2015. Baker Mayfield had a phenomenal performance, passing for 258 yards and four TDs.

Bob McNair passes

Texans’ owner, Bob McNair, died on Friday night at the age of 80. McNair did a great job building the franchise and it’s unfortunate to see him go. Our prayers go out to the family of McNair.

Philip Rivers sets NFL record

In a 45-10 win over the Arizona Cardinals, Philip Rivers completed 28 of his 29 passes. Rivers completed his first 25 passes, tying the most consecutive completions ever. He also set the record for most completions to start a game, as the other QB (Ryan Tannehill) set the record over the course of two games. Rivers also set the record for best completion rate by completing 96.55% of his passes.

 

College Football

Kliff Kingsbury out as head coach of Texas Tech

After his third straight losing season, Kliff Kingsbury has been fired by Texas Tech. Kingsbury was 35-40 in six seasons with the team. His best season with Texas Tech came in his first season with the team (2013). They went 8-5 that year.

Larry Fedora out as head coach of North Carolina

Kingsbury wasn’t the only college head coach to be let go this past weekend. North Carolina fired Larry Fedora after the team moved to 2-9. This was the second straight year the Tar Heels suffered nine losses.

Seven OT game!

If you missed this game, you really missed out. LSU took on Texas A&M in what was a seven OT game. Before the end of the fourth quarter, LSU celebrated the win by giving their head coach a Gatorade bath, but it was a little early for that. Texas A&M receiver Quartney Davis made a miracle catch as time expired, sending the game to OT. These teams matched each other perfectly six times in OT, but Texas A&M was finally able to pull off the win when WR Kendrick Rogers caught a pass to complete the two-point conversion. This game was tied for the longest game in NCAA history. It was also the highest scoring game in FBS history.

RB Travis Etienne sets Clemson record

With two rushing TDs against South Carolina, Clemson RB Travis Etienne set Clemson’s single-season rushing TD record. Etienne helped Clemson get a 56-35 win over their rivals.

Ohio State makes statement against Michigan

No. 10 Ohio State beat No. 4 Michigan 62-39 in a game they hope will help them get into the College Football Playoff. This was a win Ohio State needed, having struggled in several of their previous games. The 62 points Ohio State scored was the most points they’ve ever scored against Michigan.

QB Dwayne Haskins breaks Big Ten record

In the win over Michigan, QB Dwayne Hasksins broke a record previously held by QB Drew Brees. Haskins broke the record for single-season passing TDs in the Big Ten. Drew Brees set the record with 39 TD passes, but Haskins was able to throw for his 40th TD pass of the season in his dominating performance over Michigan.

UCF extends win streak, but suffers big loss

UCF extended their win streak to 24 in a row by beating South Florida 38-10. Although they have won 24 straight games, UCF will most likely not be making it into the College Football Playoff once again. While not making the College Football Playoff would hurt, perhaps what hurts more is the serious injury to QB McKenzie Milton. Milton was hit in the second quarter of that game, resulting in his leg being turned a way it shouldn’t have been. Prayers go out to Milton as he begins making his recovery.

 

NBA

Warriors are fine

After losing four straight games, the Golden State Warriors have won two in a row. They’ve earned wins over the Trail Blazers and Kings in their last two games. Those two victories have them currently tied for the number one spot in the Western Conference with the Clippers. Just when everything seemed wrong for the Warriors, they quickly right the ship.

Cavs beat 76ers and Rockets

After a terrible start to their season without LeBron James, the Cavs have shown some life over their last two games. Not only have they won, but they’ve earned wins over the 76ers and Rockets. While the Rockets have struggled this season and the 76ers are still trying to become elite, these were key victories for a struggling Cavs team. They seem to be getting better, but we’ll see if they can keep it going.
