Now that the Super Bowl is over, it’s time to turn our attention to how teams will look to improve next season. The Cleveland Browns are the team with the first overall pick in the draft, so I thought we’d start with them. What happens when you go 0-16 in a season? You get the first overall pick in the draft, everyone thinks you suck and rightfully so, and you also get made fun of at the NFL Honors Show.
After a winless season, the Cleveland Browns became the second team ever to go 0-16. When you don’t win a game, there’s obviously something wrong. It could be with the players, it could be with the coaching staff, or likely a combination of both. Regardless of what or who the problem is, there are changes that need to be made.
Think of something that’s wrong with the Cleveland Browns. I’ll give you a minute if you need it, but you’re probably already done. You can think of a lot of things right? They need a new quarterback, a dynamic running back, a playmaker at receiver, etc. The list goes on and on. I’d be willing to bet most of you thought of those as some of the major needs. While that may be true, there’s one thing I think the Browns really need to change. If they change this one thing, it may help turn their franchise around.
Change the perception of the franchise. CHANGE YOUR NAME! What is a Brown? Every NFL team has their logo on their helmets. The Browns logo literally is their helmet. So is a Brown an orange helmet? The name of the color the team is named after isn’t even the same color as the logo! I’ve seen an alternate logo of a Bulldog. So is a Brown a bulldog? I’ve also seen a logo of a little leprechaun/elf looking thing. Is that a Brown? What is a Brown?
Nobody knows what it is. It may have been okay be to be called the Browns in the past, but today it’s unacceptable to have a name that everyone associates with pooping in a toilet. Anyone ever heard a joke about the Browns in the Super Bowl? Yeah, they’re not talking about the NFL Championship Super Bowl.
The Cleveland Browns name has a horrible perception associated with it. Nobody wants to play there, and now we even have NFL prospects saying they don’t want to get drafted there. The Browns don’t have good players because nobody wants to play for the Browns. Nobody wants to be a Brown, partly because they don’t even know what that is!
CHANGE THE LOGO/UNIFORMS! If Cleveland has a logo of a bulldog, why not change the name to the Cleveland Bulldogs? They do have the “Dawg Pound” after all. Put a logo of a bulldog on a helmet so it actually looks cool. Until recently, the Jaguars have been one of the worst teams in the NFL for several years, while they may have been bad, at least they had cool uniforms. There was at least something attractive about them. Cleveland’s uniforms are ugly and boring. I went on Google and searched “Cleveland Browns helmet.” I found several helmet ideas that would be 100 times better than what the Browns currently have. The Browns need to change people’s perception of what they are as a professional football team. They’re not taken seriously by anyone. Getting a quarterback, running back, and receivers would be nice, but how can they do that when nobody wants to play for them? Change the name, change the uniforms, change the perception. Change the association with leaving a poop mark in a toilet to an association with a tough looking dog, or anything else! The players and coaching staff aren’t the only reasons why the Browns are horrible. Their lack of success goes much deeper. The Cleveland Browns have a lot of changes to make if they want to be taken seriously in the NFL, and if I were them, this change would be one of the first I would try to make.
